A Hunger for Healing. A Palos Verdes Residents Brings His Life-Transforming Events Home.

By Gail Doebler Kellner

Look up the subject of healing on the Internet and you could be surfing the web for hours.  Hundreds of entrepreneurs can’t wait to offer you advice, readings or prayers.  To say it’s a huge growth industry would be an understatement.

But what if you desire greater wholeness or have a hunger for meaningful and profound growth, rather than a quick fix?  Where can you go?  How can any of us truly overcome the wounds from our past and transform ourselves?

Ken Unger wants us to change the way we look at healing emotional pain.  An author, former pastor and spiritual therapist, he is passionate about his time-tested techniques that successfully heal damaged emotions and release us from the pains that bind us.

He has scheduled a special, 48- hour retreat for November 19-21, entitled “Quantum Leap in Healing.” Just before the hectic holiday season hits, the event will be held at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes.

“To heal our hurts, we have to reconnect with them,” said Unger.  “They must be allowed out of the basement of our subconscious and up into the living room of our conscious awareness.  Ultimately, we have to be willing to relive the hurts, in order to properly resolve them.  We need to re-experience the pain, and with God’s help, fully feel it, heal it and deal with the residue from the original event.  Only then can we be truly healed, and only then can we be freed from the pain that binds us.

“Most of us stopped crying a long time ago.  Not long after we get to the playground as children, we discover that we are ridiculed if we cry.  Adults may even threaten us with ‘if you don’t stop crying, I’ll give you something to cry about.’  So, we stuff our feelings, swallow our pain, and hide our every hurt until the pain that has hurt us is no longer accessible to our conscious memory.”

Unger explains that the pain doesn’t just go away. It can recede into the dark corners of the soul. It can be so deep that we are unaware that anything is there.  Instead, we may feel depressed, eat too much, suffer with physical pain or even experience a life shattering mid life crisis.

So who is this former pastor of 23 years, who is absolutely passionate about the spiritual life of humanity?  And what does he know about our pain, anyway?

At 54, he has been leading seminars and retreats on healing emotional pain all over the U.S. and Caribbean for more than 20 years. He has witnessed people changing and becoming whole with what he says are simple techniques using spiritual intuition and prayer.  He is a compassionate man who offers gentle spiritual guidance, and combines it with guided imagery, regressive therapy and the power of working in small, intimate groups.

By design, Unger’s events are highly experiential and emotionally powerful.  He equates them to a health spa for the soul; a place where you can freely make connections with feelings that will change you for the rest of your life.  He likens his approach to a spiritual form of primal therapy.

“Most retreats fill the head, but do very little for the heart.” He said.  “ I have seen a woman recover from multiple personality disorder, and have watched others recover from alcoholism and even cancer,” Unger said.

“People don’t need more information,” Unger said.  “They need transformation.  We work from the inside out, not just from the neck up.  When you change the heart, you change your life forever.”

How far would you go to find healing?  Do you have a hunger for meaningful and profound growth?  Two individuals from Kenya, Africa will travel to Rancho Palos Verdes just to attend “Quantum Leap in Healing,” a 48-hour retreat scheduled for November 19-21 at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center.

The event will be conducted by Palos Verdes resident, Ken Unger.  An author, former pastor and spiritual therapist, he wants us to change the way we look at healing emotional pain.  He is passionate about his time-tested techniques that successfully heal damaged emotions and heal us from the pains that bind us.

At 54, he has been leading seminars and retreats all over the U.S. and Caribbean for more than 20 years.  He has witnessed people changing and becoming whole with what he says are simple techniques using spiritual intuition and prayer.  He is a deeply, compassionate man who offers gentle, spiritual guidance, and combines it with guided imagery, regressive therapy and the power of working in small, intimate groups.

“I have been in therapy for years and have not accomplished in all those years as much as I did this weekend,” said a former client.  “ I felt feelings I didn’t know where there.  I felt safe.  I didn’t want to come to this retreat, and now, I don’t want to leave.”

A professional athlete and national sportscaster said that one of Unger’s retreats did more for her than 20 years of sports psychologists.  A successful businessman claimed that a brief session gave him insights that three and a half years of therapy hadn’t.“

Most retreats fill the head, but do very little for the heart,” Unger said.  I have seen a woman recover from multiple personality disorder, and have watched others recover from alcoholism, and even cancer.

“Everywhere I go, I see hurting people,” he added.  “We have events to reach people where they work, where they live and where they worship.“

People don’t need more information,” Unger emphasized.  They need transformation.  We work from the inside out, not just from the neck up.  When you change the heart, you change your life forever.”

“Peace without Prozac a Possibility?”

In a world where everyone has some pain to heal, Ken Unger offers hope. “People don’t need Prozac to achieve personal peace,” he maintains. “Emotional pain fuels our compulsive behavior, overeating and self-sabotage. If you heal the pain, you don’t need the pain-killer.”

He believes counseling doesn’t heal. “Since we have forgotten 90% of what’s happened to us, talk therapy only treats ten percent of our problem.”

When asked what works he replies, “When you have an emotional problem, you need an emotional solution.” When Unger led a seminar in a prison every inmate said he was in jail because he mishandled his emotions. Unger claims that his STEP Therapy, an acronym for Spiritual Therapy for Emotional Pain, heals core emotional pains, making it a panacea for the problems that destroy our health, relationships and happiness.

STEP Therapy uses small groups, spiritual intuition, and simple experiential methods. In retreats and seminars he teaches the attendees how to heal one another. He claims that in 28 years of leading such retreats, almost everyone says it changed them forever. A pro athlete said “Ken’s retreat helped me more than 20 years of sports psychologists.” A counseling clinic director said that each retreat equals a years worth of therapy, hence his ambitious motto, “Transform Your Life in a Weekend.”

No stranger to the media, Ken is an award winning radio host, a trained commercial actor, and has done countless radio and TV interviews.  You can view a video clip and hear an interview about him above.. People who benefitted from his events are available for interviews as well.
